Nayiss sighed as she pulled her shirt over her head and dropped it to the earth next to her. Her fingertips moved to her side, carefully exploring the mixture of scales and flesh that laced along her ribcage, her pupils narrowing into thin lines as she examined the bare area beneath her lower set of arms.
“No changessss,” she murmured.
Astredax was asleep. He had passed out immediately after they had returned to their lodgings, and Nayiss too had dozed for a few hours before she opted to take the opportunity for some much needed “her time” given her charge was liable to be out of commission for the rest of the day.
And most of her comrades were sticking to the lodge itself, not the forests surrounding its walls.
The tiefling hummed to herself as she twisted her upper set of arms over her head, a hand still pressed against the bare flesh where a third set would likely manifest if it existed. Sure enough, the musculature responded appropriately, stretching with the movement, but not indicating that anything new was present despite what the phantom sensations would imply.
“I’m almost dissssappointed,” she purred, a small smirk tugging at her lips as she continued to stretch her arms out and then behind her. She arched her back, urging her body up and over into a slow, backwards cartwheel. She landed back on her feet with the precision she desired, her bare breasts settling into place as she tossed her messy hair out of her face.
Besides the phantom twinges, everything seemed right. More flexible. More limber. More her.
And all it took was several hours of excruciating pain and enacting a dangerous occult blood ritual that could have just as easily left her dead or crazed.
Jarkul is going to give me an earful, she thought fondly, once more smirking to herself as she bent down to poke around in her bag.
The deceptively sweet, saccharine greeting of the marilith occupying the whip tucked within immediately pervaded the edges of the tiefling’s mind, but it was promptly cut off as she unceremoniously closed the bag once more, one of her lower hands now clutching a small candle and a roll of bandages.
There was a degree of personal satisfaction as the sealed demon grumbled in annoyance.
“Now… how does thisss work,” Nayiss said, continuing to muse to herself. The pupils of her snake-like eyes slitted in interest as she examined one of her hands. Her fingers curled and uncurled, curiosity flitting across her features.
There was a certain… innate knowledge. The changes at this stage had been subtle enough to avoid casual observation, but in the mire of hallucinatory dreams and restless musings, shreds of knowledge had interwoven with her thoughts. It was hard to tell if it had always been there, simply locked away in a secret part of herself or otherwise, but it was there now.
And it was burning to be used, like a writhing viper looking for its next meal.
Nayiss snapped her fingers, and a flame sparked to life on the candle’s wick, which she promptly placed beneath her palm. The fire danced merrily, but the tiefling failed to feel any discomfort. Instead, it offered a gentle warmth, licking at her flesh like a lover’s kiss as she traced her fingers through it instead of blistering her skin like it would a typical human’s.
She could feel her heartbeat as it pumped her blood through her veins, the demonic essence of it calling like a siren’s song as it longed for release. Almost instinctively she brought one of her wrists to her mouth, her lips parting to reveal her needle-like fangs. She bit down, ripping her wrist away to tear open a wound that crackled with unsheathed magic. Her eyes shot back to the hand in the fire, and there was a flash of crimson in the vague form of a blood-red serpent that twisted into a circle around it. It vanished in an instant, catching its tail in its fanged jaws.
She winced and immediately jerked her hand away from the candle, her reptilian eyes surveying the minor, but clear burn mark that had appeared on her palm.
A smile crossed her lips.
“Oh. Now that’sss interesting,” she hissed, not bothering to hide the delight in her voice before she brought the burn to her mouth to stifle the sting. A set of her other hands swiftly worked to stem the other wound she had inflicted, wrapping the bandages tightly around it and snapping her fingers again to magically clear away the blood that had started to drip down her fingers.
She passed her fingers through the candle again, and once more, it simply licked warmly at her flesh.
“Very interessssting.”
She snuffed the flame between her fingertips and dropped the objects to the ground, her hips swaying as she opted to stroll into a patch of sunlight that was filtering through the trees. It was pleasantly warm against her skin, and her scales shimmered as it bounced from their smooth surfaces.
“I think that was worth it,” she purred as she lounged on a fallen tree in direct line of the sunlight. It had been some time since she really had gotten the opportunity to sunbathe, and with the preliminary exploration done, she had every intention of taking advantage of the hours Astredax would be spending asleep.
And perhaps worth a new brand. Hmph. Something to think about.
Subconsciously, her tail twisted around a branch of the tree, creating a circle of green scales against the dark bark as she pulled her hair back from her face and closed her eyes to doze in the sun.
I just got more beautifully potent, after all.
