A New Beginning - Connor Haventree - 07-19-2018

Connor wordlessly led the black alicorn out of her stable. He had laid a strong hex on her, one that would stop her from feeling pain and would keep her asleep until the end. He took her a short way from the stables. They had found a perfectly-sized clearing nearby that Connor had spent the last week preparing for this night.

There were four circles drawn on the ground: one in the center and the other three spaced evenly around it. The first circle was drawn in nectar from flowers that only grew on Arcanan, the second created from saplings of an ash tree, and the third created using dust from arcanite moths.   The final one in the center was carved into the dirt waiting to be filled.

Connor looked up to the sky checking to make sure not a single one of the moons was showing at all. A true, moonless sky happened but twice a year and was yet another detail laid out within Gleipnir. Connor had missed it the previous year because of Whitewood’s Rebellion. He placed the tome within the center of the center.

With a heavy heart Connor started the ritual. Going to each of the outer rings he pushed his own magic into them. He had decided on the Opal as a focus for this as his most powerful one. After they each began to glow a dark purple he turned towards the alicorn. With a whispered apology his hand reached through her chest. He removed her heart, leaving no wound behind. He winced as the body hit the ground in front of him. He placed the heart on top of Gleipnir.  As he did, the heart began to beat on its own, its blood flowing down into the circle around it. The circle dug into the earth as it filled with alicorn blood.

He turned back to the alicorn’s corpse and place his hand on its horn.  His hand glowed for a moment before he pulled the horn off, effortless and clean. He thrust the horn into the center of sap-drawn circle. As he did, the circle began to glow brighter.

He removed ten blood feathers from the fallen beast’s wings and placed them into the moth dust circle at specific, even intervals. When the final feather touched the ground, all ten of them stood up on their tips and this circle too began to glow a deeper color.

Connor then made eye contact with Warren for the first time since he started this process and nodded to him. Warren approached the two shared a brief kiss of reassurance.

The next step has Connor placing his hand over Warren’s chest and moving it slowly away, a shining bright red mote of light in his hand.  Though the process was painless, Warren winced. He made the same gesture to himself a similar light white intermixed with purple came free.

Connor took both lights and placed them within the third circle. As soon as they touched they flashed and the circle took on the three colors in a swirling pattern. Quintessence, just like Drystan had described.

“Okay now for the actually hard part, then.”

For hours that seemed like years, Connor focused upon the ritual, drawing on the outer rings of magic and pulling them towards the center. The magic contained fought to be released, it resisted being formed into anything. The air was thick and heavy. More magic was here then he had ever even dreamed he could use. The ritual was beyond the scope of what he thought it would be in terms of raw power. He was almost afraid of what he had accomplished.

A dark shape around the Alicorn’s heart. The magic now so thick and concentrated that even those who can’t touch it could see it flowed around the dark shape. Slowly, over the course of hours, it became to take shape.  The shape of a human baby.

Eventually the outer circles gave off a bright flash and vanished completely. The inner circle began to empty itself into the center. As suddenly and dramatically as it had begun, it was finished.  An infant, silent, but breathing, lay naked amidst the runic circle, now quite empty and powerless, the disenchanted Gleipnir next to him..

Connor cradled the infant, wrapping him in a cloak. Exhausted, he could do nothing but smile.

“We did it.”
